چکیده

The degree of beaming in Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) is currently unknown. The uncertainty in the γ-ray beaming angle, θb, leaves the total energy release (∝ θ2 b) and the event rate per galaxy (∝ θ b ) unknown to within orders of magnitude. Since the delayed radio emission of GRB sources originates from a mildly relativistic shock and receives only weak relativistic beaming, the rate of radio-selected transients with no GRB counterparts can be used to set an upper limit on θ b . We find that a VLA survey with a sensitivity of ∼ 0.1 mJy at 10 GHz could identify ∼> 2 × 10(θb/10) radio afterglows across the sky if each source is sampled at least twice over a period of one month or longer. From the total number of ∼> 0.1 mJy sources observed at 8.44 GHz and the fraction of fading sources at 1.44 GHz, we get the crude limit θb ∼> 6. Subject headings: gamma rays: bursts

Fast X-ray Transients and Gamma-ray Bursts: Constraints on Beaming

The detection of x-ray afterglows of gamma-ray burst (GRB) sources has enabled the optical discovery that GRBs are at cosmological distances, which confirms that the enormous luminosities required must produce a relativistically expanding fireball. It is not yet clear if this expansion is quasi-spherical or beamed, or if the beaming differs between the prompt GRB and afterglow, although the dif...

How to Tell a Jet from a Balloon: A Proposed Test for Beaming in Gamma Ray Bursts

If gamma ray bursts are highly collimated, radiating into only a small fraction of the sky, the energy requirements of each event may be reduced by several (∼ 4–6) orders of magnitude, and the event rate increased correspondingly. Extreme conditions in gamma ray bursters lead to highly relativistic motions (bulk Lorentz factors Γ ∼> 100). This results in strong forward beaming of the emitted ra...

Beaming Effects in GRBs and Orphan Afterglows

The overall dynamical evolution and radiation mechanism of γ-ray burst jets are briefly introduced. Various interesting topics concerning beaming in γ-ray bursts are discussed, including jet structures, orphan afterglows and cylindrical jets. The possible connection between γ-ray bursts and neutron stars is also addressed.

Unveiling the population of orphan γ-ray bursts

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are detectable in the γ-ray band if their jets are oriented toward the observer. However, for each GRB with a typical θjet, there should be ∼2/θ2 jet bursts whose emission cone is oriented elsewhere in space. These off-axis bursts can eventually be detected when, due to the deceleration of their relativistic jets, the beaming angle becomes comparable to the viewing angle...

Late-time Radio Observations of 74 Type Ibc Supernovae: Strong Constraints on Off-axis Gamma-ray Bursts

We present late-time radio observations of 74 local Type Ibc supernovae, including six events with broad optical absorption lines (“hypernovae”). None of these objects show evidence for radio emission attributable to offaxis gamma-ray burst jets spreading into our line-of-sight. Comparison with our afterglow models reveals the following conclusions: (1) Less than ∼ 1.4% of Type Ibc supernovae a...
